Acanthopanax senticosus are commonly known as "Siberian Ginseng" because it is believed to have similar herbal properties to those of panax ginseng. This is also reflected in its formerly used genus name "Acanthopanax" meaning "thorny ginseng". And Acanthopanax belong to the same genus in the family Araliaceae with Ginseng, and Dendropanax.
Acanthopanax grow in mixed and coniferous mountain forests, forming low undergrowth or are found in groups in thickets and edges.
Acanthopanax are sometimes found in oak groves at the foot of cliffs, very rarely in high forest riparian woodland. Its native habitat is China, Korea, Japan, and Russia. Acanthopanax are broadly tolerant of soils, growing in sandy, loamy, and heavy clay soils with acid, neutral, or alkaline chemistry.
Acanthopanax can tolerate sun or dappled shade and some degree of pollution. Acanthopanax is a deciduous shrub growing to 2 meters at a slow rate and flowers in July in most habitats. The flowers are hermaphroditic and are pollinated by insects.
Best collection period for Acanthopanax’s leaves is from mid-July to early August, best collection period for stems and roots is after deciduous and before permafrost. Collected roots and stems should not be exposed to rain, dryness should keep about 14%, the best storage temperature is 0-3 ℃, better to store with a plastic seal.
